Sugar-white sandy shorelines, turquoise waves and a laid-back atmosphere of relaxation and fun have long defined a trip to Florida’s scenic stretch of highway known as 30A. This sunny vacation destination is a delight for travelers from across the country and map, but in light of the outbreak of COVID-19 in Panama City Beach, the state of Florida is asking adventurers to put their travel plans on hold in the name of health and wellness.
As of April 1, 2020, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a 30-day, state-wide stay-at-home order that goes beyond the county-specific mandates that were previously issued in March. At this time, all residents are being asked to stay inside as much as possible unless traveling out is essential for food or medications. Out of state travelers are asked to postpone travel plans to the state until further notice in order to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Many non-essential, public-facing businesses are closed, and delivery and take-out options are to be used in place of restaurant dine-in options.
General Guidelines for Slowing the Spread of COVID-19
Those most at risk for developing COVID-19 are assumed to be adults over the age of 65 and those with underlying health conditions. Because COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that spreads easily through the air, social distancing is an effective tool in slowing the spread of the disease. Staying inside as much as possible is advisable and if travel outdoors is necessary, the use of a face mask is recommended. Regular handwashing can keep transmissions odds low as well and hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds at a time with warm water and soap. In the event soap isn’t readily available, hand sanitizer is an effective alternative, particularly after coughing, sneezing or handling items in public. Just as essential to overall health at this time is an awareness of mental health standards. It’s important for those spending increased time at home to practice regular at-home exercise, get good sleep and maintain a healthy diet. Regular interactions with family, friends and loved ones over virtual platforms is a great way to keep positive and connected during these unprecedented times.
